Recipe Tips
- Chili tastes even better the next day.
- Don’t skip the butter—it adds richness and depth.
- The agave doesn’t make the chili sweet; it simply balances the acidity of the tomatoes.
- Add extra cayenne if you like more heat.
- Simmering for the full 3 hours develops the best flavor.
Variations
Make it Spicier
Add jalapeños, chipotle peppers, or extra cayenne.
Make it Milder
Reduce the chili powder and omit the cayenne.
Add More Vegetables
Corn, zucchini, or carrots all freeze well.
Add More Beans
Black beans make a great addition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you freeze homemade chili?
Yes! Homemade chili freezes extremely well. Once cooled completely, store it in airtight freezer containers for up to 3 months.
Is it better to freeze chili with beans?
Yes. Kidney and pinto beans hold up well in the freezer and maintain their texture after reheating.
How long does chili last in the freezer?
For the best quality, enjoy frozen chili within 3 months, though it remains safe longer if continuously frozen.
Should I thaw chili before reheating?
Thawing overnight in the refrigerator gives the best texture, but chili can also be reheated directly from frozen over low heat.
